Greetings!
In 2006 and 2007 we have presented our one day Center
Directors Toolkit Workshop at the ASBDC Conferences.
The ASBDC has had excellent feedback from the over 100
students who have attended our workshop. Each of those who
attended were entitled to receive a complimentary copy of our
Center Director Toolkit - the best toolkit that we can design for the
SBDC Center Director and Consultants.
If you missed these special workshops in Houston and Denver,
you can still get the Center Director Toolkit via online or onsite
training options now available. See content below for more info.
Overview of CDTK
Session 1 - Opportunity Analysis:
This session trains the SBDC team in the importance of learning (up front) public and private
stakeholder goals, objectives, obstacles, and desires (the goods). SBDC products and services or
special proposals offered should be aligned with stakeholder "goods." Creating great presentations
aligned to stakeholder "goods" involves alignment of solutions, return on investment, reasons to act
now and next steps. A complete and powerful presentation is the outcome. Several "goods- aligned"
presentations are included in CDTK as examples, so that SBDCs can quickly adapt these ideas and
put them to work persuading public and private stakeholders. Now SBDC Directors have tools that
persuade stakeholders - and capture more funds or other SBDC critical stakeholder support and
contributions.
Session 2 - Opportunity Challenges
This session asks why up to 80% of small businesses terminate in their first five years. Are we
starting them too fast? Is it too easy for them to open their doors without being prepared? The USA
cannot afford to lose 20M of the estimated 25M small businesses now operating. A linked
spreadsheet model shows clearly that most SBDC(s) serve only 1-2% of the total number of
businesses in their service areas. Compounding the problem is that SBA State Profiles show that
each year more businesses terminate then start up. We seem to be losing ground. In this session,
the SBDC is provided with new impact-driving strategies: capture more high value clients in high
growth sectors; spend less time with "dreamer" non-clients; use new referral generators, etc. This
session can be a "wake up call plus motivator" for SBDC Directors.
Session 3 - Opportunity Creation for Existing Businesses
Session 4 - Consulting Existing Companies (5-500 Empl.)
This session focuses on the importance of preparing SBDC Directors and Counselors for providing a
higher level of counseling and assistance to high-value target companies with multiple employees
(5-500). The training and tools in this session help the SBDC Director professionally approach VITO
(very important top officers; e.g. CEO, President, Chairman, etc.). A professional approach includes
learning VITO "goods" and aligning SBDC solutions to help them discover their risks, root causes of
problems, and alternative strategies to improve company results in critical business areas. The AfCI
7-Step Preparation Steps are presented, linking to the workshop theme: "Success Occurs When
Preparation Meets Opportunity."
Session 5 - Creating a High Performance SBDC:
With limited staff, increases in goals, and decreases in funding, what in the heck is the SBDC
Director to do? To help, this session includes training and tools for transforming the SBDC into a
High Performance Organization. The tools and training include a powerful SBDC Scorecard (a form
of Balanced- Baldrige model) complete with suggested measures, built-in trend charts and action
plans. This session aims at helping SBDC teams improve efficiency in terms of resource availability,
budget/cost, cycle time, customer satisfaction, rework and productivity. A rewards model for SBDC
excellent performers in included to motivate SBDC staff toward excellent performance. Now the
SBDC Director will have the knowledge and tools to help squeeze more performance out of limited
resources!
Session 6 - Optimizing SBDC Processes
The CDTK is designed to help the SBDC Center Director and Counselors achieve more impact by
studying and applying the tools and strategies provided in the six (6) hyper-linked presentations, each
presented in a suggest series of implementation.

"We Believe that Success Occurs when Preparation Meets Opportunity!"
|

This session focuses on existing business clients; how to find them; how to drive them to your SBDC;
and how to position your SBDC to be their "business doctor." This strategy is supplemented by one of
the best AfCI tools created to date: "Small Business Company Assessment." This outstanding
company assessment tool is used to "x-ray" any company from top to bottom, with both quick looks
(16 critical areas) and in-depth analysis of 160 critical areas. The 16-question version of this
Company Assessment tool is included in CDTK. Now SBDC Directors and Counselors can use the
Company Assessment tool to analyze business clients, to learn what is broken and if they are facing
risk of early termination. Session 3 also provides a good tool to manage target client and stakeholder
capture campaigns. Now SBDC Directors and Counselors can extend counseling hours and
assistance to existing businesses - and learn more about real client needs & failures.
This session provides training and tools aimed at analysis and improvement of SBDC Counseling,
Training and other key processes. CDTK includes a great Process Chart tool to help the SBDC
decrease cycle time of SBDC key processes. Also included is a special Six Sigma model that can
help the SBDC understand and reduce defects (where defects are expressed as failures in eyes of
clients). The secret of a High Performance SBDC Organization is to emerge with "lean" processes
and minimized defects or failures (e.g. Wasted time, loans not granted, early termination, dropping
sales, loss of jobs, etc.). Knowledge is power - if applied and shared!

The Center Directors Toolkit is an extremely focused product. The focus is
on economic impact achieved by SBDC Directors, Counselors and
Administrative Staff. The "theme" of this workshop and the CDTK is:
"Success Occurs when Preparation Meets Opportunity." Success is defined
at significantly increasing business client survival rate, added sales and
jobs, capturing more funds from public and private stakeholders, and
engaging with existing business owners for five plus hours (extended
counseling).
